Ayah 1 & 2 : Kitaab & Qur'an

Ayah 1 & 2 : Kitaab and Qur'an

Alif Laam Raa Those are the miraculous/ divine signs of the clear and clarifying book
Opening letters : Alif Laam Raa

A lot of surahs of the Quran are in groups, they are bunched together. Those surahs have a similar style. They are related to each other. Allah wants us to consider them connected to each other more deeply by the way Allah opens those surahs. Surahs which begin with Alif Laam Raa are like that.

Surah no. 12 , surah no. 10 i.e. Surah Yunus is a Makki Surah. Surah no. 10 to surah no. 23 are Makki surahs. Surah 8 & 9 are Madni Surahs but they are a part of the larger group of surahs that are Makki.

5 of the surahs begin with Alif Laam Raa.

Surah Yunus

Alif Laam Raa Those are the miraculous signs of the wise book.

Surah Hud

Alif Laam Raa A book whose miraculous signs were stitched together and then they were opened up and explained from the one that possesses all wisdom and has all news.

Surah Yusuf

Alif Laam Raa Those are the miraculous/ divine signs of the clear and clarifying book

Surah Rad

Alif laam meem raa

Surah Ibrahim

Surah Hijr

Allah chose not to tell us what these letters mean. But the entire purpose of this book is for us to learn.
How does Allah want me to learn something? I don't even know what it means.

والله يعلم و أنتم لا تعلمون

There are some things that you are not meant to know.Allah is the one who knows and you don't. It is an important orientation. That reminder is necessary in certain surahs.

Why is that necessary in Surah Yusuf?

It's important because the story of Yusuf AS has a lot of details. There are a lot of people involved. He has got 11 brothers, their parents, there's a lineage, map, journey, Egyptian empire involved. So there's a lot of characters, individuals, names, places and information involved.

Allah is withholding information and the first thing he has withhold is what alif laam raam means.

There are some things that you need to know for the purpose of guidance

There are some things that you need to know for the purpose of guidance and there are other things that you become very curious about but they won't serve the purpose of guidance.

تلك آيات الكتاب المبين

Those are miraculous revelations / signs of the clear and clarifying book.

What needs to be clear has been made clear and what he didn't make clear is for your own benefit.
The mandate of guidance comes from Allah and not from us.

تلك

The word "those" sounds like it's far away. It's remarkable because the word book is referring to the actual written word of Allah.

56:78-79 It's in a hidden book with Allah's possession that only the closest angels can access.

From it what is learnt by Jibreel AS is delivered to Prophet SAW. So the original copy is with Allah and that's far away.

When you point at something far in arabic you use the words ذلك ، تلك ، أولئك

The word تلك may also refer to Alif Laam Raa. Alif Laam Raa are those ayaat of the book. This teaching belongs to this group of surahs. These are ayaat of that part of the book.

الكتاب

The word book refers to something written.
29: 48 And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.

Prophet SAW didn't have access to any book.

Why Allah SWT has used the word book here?

1) the origin of the Quran is that it's a part of much larger book that contains all the scriptures of Allah
2) the words that are being recited are a part of a book and they will eventually become in the form of written book
3) the word الكتاب can also refer to a surah by itself. A single surah can also be called a kitaab & a single surah can also be called a Quran, because kitaab means something written and Quran means a recital. A single surah is a single recital.

We have to humble ourselves to the way Allah teaches and speaks. Allah knows what needs our attention first. The three ayaat in the beginning of surah Yusuf don’t include the story.

The unique feature of the Quran is that the oral and written tradition are connected together.
The story of Yusuf AS mentioned in the Book of Genesis was also originally revealed by Allah SWT to the Israelites from the same book الكتاب in Hebrew. Allah SWT will “retell” the story to Arabs in arabic.

Clear & clarifying - المبين

The description of the surah / book / Quran is المبين.
Clear means something clear in itself.
The book makes itself clear that it’s not a word of a human being.
The word مبين comes from the verb أبانا which comes from the origin بان which means to separate.
Meaning when you read it, it separates itself from the word of human beings
The information about the story of Yusuf AS was not accessible to any person in Arabia therefore when Prophet SAW talked about it, it became clear to the people that this book is the book of Allah.

It’s clear in its message.

It’s very self explanatory, self evident.

The book of Allah is clear in what it wants from us.

It’s demanding from its reader a change within themselves.
What does the book clarify?
It clarifies,
  • the way we should live.
  • The difference between the right and wrong.
  • What really happened in history separating it from the lies.
  • The original purpose
It can only clarify when it’s clear first.

The Quran is clear in itself and Allah has made it the responsibility of the ummah to go out and clarify the book for the people.

2:160 Those who repented, corrected themselves and then went out and clarify.

12:2 No doubt about it, it is we in fact, we sent it down as an arabic recital so that/ hopefully all of you might think & understand.

In the first ayah Allah called it kitaab and in this ayah Allah called it Quran. He’s telling us that it’s in a written form in the heavens and it was turned into something to be recited in arabic on the tongue of Muhammad SAW.
We have sent it down as “حال” an arabic Quran.
What does arabic mean ?
  • To express yourself
  • To express all of your feelings in the most elaborate way
  • He opened up about what was going inside of him and elaborated it with a great detail أعرب عما في ضميره
  • A river which is overflowing - عربا
  • A guy who has so much in his stomach that he is going to throw up
Quran was revealed in arabic so that not only the arabs but all of people across the planet could understand
But how come all the people understand arabic?
Allah prepared the arabic language for the final revelation.
Allah chose a language that had been isolated and its words became extremely rich- linguistic perspective

Saying of Umar RA
Learn arabic because it enhances your ability to think
Arabic became the language of the believer .When islam spread to non arab lands, they kept their languages but mastered arabic. Wherever Islam went, arabic went with it. Arabic language is the language of the people of Quran.

Allah protected the Quran in Arabic language so that everyone is on the same page and doesn’t come up with their own meaning.

Allah revealed it in arabic so that all of YOU think & understand.

Allah owns all languages. All speech belongs to Allah. So he gave us the Quran in arabic so that we as an ummah have a minimal level of thinking and understanding and on top of that our knowledge and wisdom can be built.

We abandon our direct connection with the Quran and abandon the study of arabic language.

تعقلون

Think and understand : Right kind of thoughts lead towards understanding
Control over one's emotions

We gave you an arabic Quran that’s for the mind and the heart
  • Aqal directly affects the heart too
  • Jahal : inability to control one’s emotions
  • The Quran is not emphasizing knowledge, it’s emphasizing thinking and understanding

Yusuf AS had very little knowledge but his thinking was clear!
